What We Do

We aim to enrich the lives of children and young people with life limiting conditions in hospices through the creative, performing and literary Arts, enabling individual expression, creativity and communication.

We believe that the Arts can benefit a wide-spectrum of disorders, diseases and disabilities and may help reduce pain, anxiety, and tension which seriously ill or disabled children may experience .

We recognize that families may also derive great benefit from the Arts and aim to provide sessions with their children and events arranged especially for parents, carers and siblings of children in hospices. Caring for a child with a life-limiting or progressive condition can be demanding and stressful; involvement in the Arts may also improve the quality of life of their families by helping people improve their mental, emotional, and even physical well-being.

In addition to our volunteer teams, we work with Arts professionals, developing contacts with individuals and organizations who can help us to bring the Arts to hospices. We support art and music therapists and artists in residence by identifying areas where we can help; our volunteers may work closely with them in arts, crafts, music and drama sessions.

Jackie Hassall Chairperson

“It's an honour to work with my chART co-founders and dear friends, Carol and Suzanne, as we aim to help children and young people in hospices through the Arts. I hope to use my background in Early Years and Primary education to provide broad and varied Arts based experiences for these children and their families. Carol, Suzanne and I share the same work ethics and determination to ensure that chART will deliver its aims. I promise to put my heart and soul into bringing the Arts to children with life-limiting conditions”.

“chART– what a charity to have co-founded with two wonderful ladies who have hearts of gold, passion and determination! We are friends as well as colleagues and work so well together. Working to help children with life limiting conditions in hospices, and their families, is humbling and I will do whatever it takes to make a difference. Being a breast cancer survivor, helps me to understand some of the emotions and anxieties these children and families go through; surviving the disease has made me live life to the full, change my priorities and always make time for others. I have been involved in fund-raising for over ten years- this is where I am happiest!”

Carol Bromley Secretary

“I’m delighted to be part of this dedicated team, including close friends, Jackie and Suzanne, as we work to bring the Arts into lives of children and young people in hospices. PATRONS - BLACK STONE CHERRY

Family comes first—you can never forget who was there with you from the start. The Edmonton, Kentucky-based rock n’ roll quartet Black Stone Cherry was raised on musical forefathers such as Cream, Led Zeppelin, Muddy Waters, and the Faces, among other 1970s staples, and, now, with its sixth album, Family Tree, BSC salutes its classic rock heritage and honors its legacy with a beast of a Southern rock n’ roll album.

“We caught divine intervention with this one,” guitarist Ben Wells says with a good chuckle. “We hit a creative spark and tapped into a spirit and a fire we hadn’t before.” Drummer John Fred Young adds: “Family Tree showcases all of our collective musical influences and how we have taken those to create something that is truly our own unique Southern American Rock ‘N Roll Sound.”

For 17 years, Black Stone Cherry has put forth a new vicious breed of Southern rock, injecting youthful vitality and a myriad of fresh new influences into the beloved American rock tradition. To date, the band has released five critically acclaimed albums, and one well-received blues EP. Black Stone Cherry has also rocked 12,000-cap arena shows, topped the UK charts, and shared the stage with a diverse roster of superstars, including Def Leppard, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, Mötorhead, and ZZ Top.

Black Stone Cherry came together in 2001 in Edmonton, Kentucky, eventually coalescing around the lineup of Chris Robertson, vocals and guitar; Ben Wells, guitar and vocals; Jon Lawhon, bass and vocals; and John Fred Young, drums. Young's dad Richard, and his Uncle Fred, are two members of the iconic country-fried rock n’ roots band The Kentucky HeadHunters, and the high school-aged boys came up honing their craft in the group’s Practice House, a 1940s bungalow. “We grew up in the Kentucky Headhunters’ rehearsal space, looking up at posters of Cream, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, the Stones, Montrose, and the Faces. We were like kids someone took in a time capsule and put in the woods,” says drummer John Fred Young.

Like the band’s previous album and EP, Black Stone Cherry opted to self-produce and track Family Tree at David Barrick's Barrick Recording, the same studio where BSC recorded its self-titled debut and Kentucky albums. BSC also opted to not over-rehearse in advance of the album, instead preferring the immediacy and spontaneity of in the-moment takes. “There was a lot of laughter in the studio this time, and an air of comfort because we had self-produced the last few releases. It helped us get down to the nitty gritty bones of our music,” says bassist Jon Lawhon. The band also entrusted guitarist and vocalist Chris Robertson to mix the album. This homespun approach perfectly suited the loose but epiphanic creative sessions that birthed Family Tree.

Family Tree boasts BSC’s tried-and-true lucky number with its 13 songs, and, like all BSC releases, features songwriting contributions from each member. The result is a modern and meaty blues-based rock album, with unexpected sonic twists like punchy horn sections, barrelhouse pianos, Southern gospel organ, atmospheric synthesizer passages, and forays into funk and country.

The title track melds brawny blues riffage with BSC’s most telepathic ensemble playing, showcasing the group’s maturation as a unit without detracting from its Southern, hard rock wallop. The album also packs some satisfyingly surprising moments. “Carry Me On Down The Road” is a sleek slice of pure 1970s American rock n’ roll—something you would hear blaring out of a 1972 Chevy El Camino. “James Brown” offers forth some stanky swamp-funk, replete with wah-wah guitars and gospel girl vocals. “Bad Habit,” however, dripping sensual innuendo hammered home by a horny groove-rock beat, delivers some prime hooky and heavy BSC.

One Family Tree centerpiece is the rustically elegant “My Last Breath,” a sweetly downhome ode to the unbreakable bonds of family. The song’s goose bump-inducing call and response male and female vocal breakdown is one of those musical moments where light just shines through the speakers and you know everything is going to be alright.

Two special guests bring Family Tree full circle, one being Chris’ 5 year-old son singing backup on the brawny swaggering “You Got The Blues,” and the other being jam band icon Warren Haynes’ vocal and guitar cameo on the delta stomp of “Dancing In The Rain.” The band first met Warren 17 years ago when they first came to New York to showcase for their new label. “I remember coming to New York when we first were signed, and hearing Warren’s voice behind me the minute my feet hit the street,” recalls bassist Jon Lawhon. “Hearing him play on this track all these years later gave me chills.”

Having Warren guest on the album was a wonderful gesture of “you’re in the family now.” It was truly a validation of all the miles the band has clocked on tour, and the dues the guys have paid being away from home. “It’s amazing to me how four good old boys from nowhere Kentucky can still be around 17 years later,” singer/guitarist Chris Robertson says. Ben Wells concludes: “I don’t remember how life was outside of Black Stone Cherry. The four of us are family.”

PATRON - NATHAN JAMES

Hailing from Reading in Berkshire, Nathan James started singing at the tender age of 10 and hasn't stopped since. Aged 20, he toured with American rock show Route 66 sponsored by Harley Davidson and fronted the show with Clive Jackson of Dr and the Medics fame, playing the Harley festivals and 4 UK and European tours. In 2010 Nathan toured European arenas with Thriller, the Michael Jackson show, singing Michael’s more rock rooted tunes - Dirty Diana, Beat It, etc.

In 2012 Nathan was showcased in the UK on the TV show The Voice. He reached the final 100 voices in the country and the judges praised his voice but felt they only heard one dimension. He sang Living on a Prayer and was dubbed as "the rock singer". The videos of Nathan’s audition have since received over 1 million views on YouTube.

Nathan released his self-titled debut album of covers in spring 2012. He chose to record an acoustic album as something of a ‘middle finger’ to The Voice. Nathan says "When it's acoustic, you can't hide, it's the purest form and I wanted people to hear what my voice can do". He picked songs that meant a lot to him and have inspired him to sing.

His influences are diverse, from Glenn Hughes, David Coverdale and Axl Rose, to Stevie Wonder, Michael Bolton, Elton John and Freddie Mercury to name but a few.

In summer 2012 Nathan gained a place on the live finals of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s search for Jesus to star in an arena production of the classic rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar.

Nathan was the favourite from day one and had what is described as “the show’s most memorable performance” with his cover of the Guns n Roses hit Sweet Child o’ Mine [up a semi tone from the original].

He gained a great following and came fifth out of the final eleven and had the privilege of performing with the nation’s favourite, Gary Barlow. After Superstar had ended, Nathan launched his album officially at a sold out show in his hometown, where he performed tracks from his album and also some original material with a full band.

Before Superstar aired on ITV in the summer of 2012, Nathan was scouted by the Trans Siberian Orchestra who discovered a video of him online and flew him over to USA to audition for America’s most successful Prog Rock super group. He was offered a place and was sent back to London to continue filming for Superstar. Whilst appearing on This Morning after leaving the competition, Nathan revealed that he would be going to America a few months later to join the band for their up coming Arena tour. He played twenty one states in two months, sharing the stage with guitarist Al Pitrelli and legendary vocalist Jeff Scott Soto.

2013 saw two sold out headline shows at the Hippodrome Casino in Leicester Square, a guest appearance with Jeff Scott Soto at Hard Rock Hell AOR Festival in Sheffield and numerous dates singing for ex Scorpions guitar god Uli Jon Roth, aswell as performing with a 100 piece orchestra at St. David’s Hall in Cardiff.

Nathan began recording an album of original music with numerous guest musicians during the summer of 2013 at Outhouse Studios in Reading, under the watchful eye of It Bites/Frost/Arena/John Wetton guitarist/vocalist and producer extraordinaire John Mitchell who also contributes a number of solos. Mastering was taken care of by Harry Hess of Canadian AORsters Harem Scarem. The album Sun & Moon features the cream of the crop of musicians - Micky Moody [Whitesnake, Snakecharmer], Gus G [Firewind, Ozzy Osbourne], Ash Soan [Adele, Rick Wakeman], Craig Blundell [Frost] and Andy Treacey [Faithless] amongst others. The songs have all been written by Neil Fairclough [Queen], his sister Lois and her husband John Dagnall. Neil also plays bass on the album. Backing vocalists include Jeff Scott Soto who is a huge supporter of Nathan and the band. Glenn Hughes, Michael Bolton, Michael Sweet and many top vocalists and musicians have all expressed their admiration for his talent.

In November 2013, Nathan returned to America to rejoin Trans Siberian Orchestra once more for their winter schedule which was again, an outright success. This years toured also included a month in Europe where Nathan got the chance to perform at Hammersmith Apollo and he received a standing ovation for his rendition of ‘Gutter Ballet’ by Savatage. On his return to the UK, Nathan began the search for a live band who would be able to match up to the musicianship on the album.

The live band of Inglorious are all relatively unknown, but have been assembled from the best young musicians in the country. Lead guitarist Drew Lowe, who played several tracks on the album, was the obvious choice to take the reins in the band. Drew has played guitar since the age of twelve, playing in bands constantly and, following his tour with Nathan in the Bohemian Rhapsody stage show, he secured a slot depping for Laurie Wisefield in We Will Rock You in the West End. He has played with many top recording artists including Boy George, but also with many others touring the UK, Europe and as far afield as Russia.

Drew’s cousin Colin Parkinson was chosen as bass player. An amazing musician and singer, Colin has not only played and fronted bands with Drew since he was fifteen, he has also recorded sessions for Jessie J, many X Factor projects, the BBC and has been playing shows worldwide with many artists, most recently in Copenhagen where he has lived for the last couple of years.

Colin has also been in many bands over the years with drummer Phil Beaver. Phil has been playing, touring and producing since his early teens and when Colin and Phil were asked to play a few of the Inglorious tracks together, it was obvious from the first note that their versatility and musicality were meant for those songs and would provide the backbone of Inglorious.

The only person missing was a second guitarist to round out the sound. Here we find the awesome Geordie, Billy Taylor. Billy picked up a guitar at fourteen after watching the Guns n Roses Paradise City music video. Unlike the rest of the band, Billy is completely self-taught, although he was forced to take guitar lessons at age 15, resulting in his guitar teacher being fired from the school as he admitted he couldn't teach him anything! He began playing professionally in bands shortly after and has been teaching guitar, drums and bass since he was eighteen.

Nathan’s musical director, the multi talented Liam Holmes has been a lynch-pin in the band and, whilst not a permanent member, he will be part of the touring line up of Inglorious.

Inglorious have managed to amass over 2.5k followers on Facebook and 1.5k on Twitter with only two 30 second clips of music, such is the anticipation for the band. The release in May of the entirely live video for ‘Burn’ – a cover of the Deep Purple classic – was hailed as nothing short of a masterpiece. Voted as a Classic Rock track of the week and receiving comments from Steve Lukather of Toto “@TheNathanJames @WeAreInglorious KILLER!!! Great playing from everyone!! and the vocals are insane! Love it!” and Michael Sweet of Stryper “Great voice brother - I'm a fan too and you probably know that already”.

Spring of this year Nathan was asked to performed at Sweden Rock Festival as part of the Rocklassiker All-Stars band including Mikkey Dee [Motorhead] , Ian Haughland [Europe] , Pontus Norgren [Hammerfall, Talisman] . Nathan shared the stage with TSO brother Jeff Scott Soto and the others for what turned out to be a real festival highlight, watched by over 8k people.

Nathan is without doubt one of the best rock vocalists ever to come out of the UK and he is well on his way to stardom. There is no doubt that Inglorious will be the vehicle to propel, not only Nathan, but the rest of the band into the hearts of the nation and the world.

chART welcomes Nathan James.

PATRON - SUE ASHCROFT

Sue was born in the small seaside town of Gourock on the west coast of Scotland. Having been brought up in a household filled with music, it was soon apparent that she would develop the family passion for singing, playing instruments and listening to whatever music was available. In her formative years, she played trombone, piano, bassoon and was a member of various choirs and operatic societies.

Sue spent the first few summers of her teens staying with her sister in Inverkip - a tiny village with not many kids of that age, other than a group of boys who listened to something called rock music! So, Sue was introduced to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple - and the obsession began.

Having little or no money, the only way to get a fix was to borrow LP's from the local library. By listening to one, she then looked for either others by the same artist or others which similar musicians played on. A case in point being Santana. This was how Sue discovered Journey! From the very first album she thought they were interesting, innovative and loved everything about them.

She had also started watching the Old Grey Whistle Test which is where she discovered some of the bands she still classes as favourites to this day - The Tubes, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Pat Travers for instance. In 1979, Sue’s art teacher had an idea to keep kids out of pubs (who were only really going to watch the bands), that he would open a cafe and put on all the acts who were at that time on the west coast club circuit. Gourock's own Henry Gorman Band were a regular fixture along with Red Ellis and many others. This was Sue’s first real involvement in the music scene as she had, with a group of friends, helped to get the cafe up and running. This was also the year in which she saw my first proper gig - March 22nd 1979, Glasgow Apollo, Journey supported by Pat Travers - the perfect gig. As you can imagine, having had the first 2 drum solo's she ever saw being by Tommy Aldridge and Steve Smith, this inspired her to be the drum freak she is today.

It was at this time also that Sue met her first husband whose parents subsequently moved to Wigan, which they also did in 1985. Music had been such a huge part of her life and she was unsure of how she would continue to get her musical fix so far from home, but it's funny how things work out sometimes.

A friend who was a sound engineer called from Gourock one day and asked if he and a couple of guys could stay overnight at her house on the long drive to London. Of course Sue said yes. One of the boys was Doogie White! They had met several years before when Doogie was in La Paz, but this was a nice surprise. They lost touch for a while after that and life went on, Sue’s 2 children, divorce, meeting and marrying the wonderful Phil - she had gone to plenty of gigs, but not really had any involvement as such until friends of theirs decided to start a record label - the ill-fated Now and Then Records. Along with that came The Gods Festival which Sue offered to help with by making the sandwiches! From that, realising that she had the gift of the gab, Bruce Mee asked if she would like to contribute to Fireworks.

So, fourteen years on, having done interviews with most of her heroes, becoming a qualified photographer, artist liaison for Firefest, travelling all over the place for the love of the music, Sue now manages several bands, is a booking agent, PR agent and publicist and has had several photos used on the cover of books by writer Neil Daniels.

Sue is delighted to be working with ChArt and will be striving to have items signed by bands and to publicise the great work of the charity in the future.

PATRON - ROY BRIGHT

Roy was born in Manchester and grew up in Burnley, East Lancashire. He received his secondary education at St. Wilfrids C of E High School in Blackburn and upon leaving school, decided to join the Royal Navy as a Gunner. The need to patrol some of the worlds ‘hotspots’ allowed him to travel the globe extensively, and was very fortunate to see a vast array of exotic countries and different cultures.

In 1998, having been a musician since he was 6yrs old and, having played a plethora of musical instruments, he decided to leave the Royal Navy to pursue a career as a professional musician. From there Roy experienced many highs in his first band ‘deponeye’ until that ended in 2004.

In 2005, he started his second and current band ‘Exit State’. To date they have enjoyed great success having toured all over the UK and parts of Europe, had a No1 video on Kerrang TV’s Most Requested show plus enjoyed sharing the stage with the likes of Michael Schenker, Blaze Bayley (Iron Maiden), Esoterica, Dave Evans (AC/DC), The Black Mollys, Forever Never, Black Spiders & Marseille. Following a successful tour with guitar legend Michael Schenker in 2012, the band were delighted to be asked to and become Patron’s of the Children’s Hospice Arts charity chARTUK, whose amazing work aims to enrich the lives of children and young people with life limiting conditions in hospices through the creative, performing and literary Arts, enabling individual expression, creativity and communication.

In 2013, following two previously successful album releases, they released their third studio album entitled Let’s See It All, which was met with great critical and fan acclaim. From that album, with the support of Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal (Guns ‘n’ Roses) and Wayne Findlay (Michael Schenker Group / No Sky Today) they released the single ‘Crystalline’ with all proceeds from the sales of the single going to chARTUK.

Roy Bright has excelled his entire life; first as a Gunner in the Royal Navy and more publicly in his role as frontman of the signed rock band ‘Exit State’. However, not one to supress his creative flair, Bright is now making waves as an author with his compelling and celebrated debut novel.

Judas RB

Written by Roy Bright and masterfully melding fiction with faith, ‘Judas’ turns scripture on its head to depict the damned modern-day life of Judas Iscariot. The novel is turning heads and garnering rave reviews from around the world; quite a feat for the former military gunner-turned rock star who is now finding his feet in the world of literature.

‘Judas’ defies any single genre and perfectly blurs the lines between fiction and faith to present the modern-day life story of one the twelve original apostles of Jesus Christ – Judas Iscariot. But don’t mistake this for a piece of raw Christian fiction; the narrative melds its religious overtones with action, adventure and enough suspense to keep readers needing only the edges of their seats.

“This is just another facet of what is turning out to be a very eclectic career in the limelight,” admits Bright. “Writing has always been a huge passion of mine, even though I normally have to put it on the backburner due to our busy touring schedule. However, during some recent downtime I was finally able to put pen to paper.”

Continuing, “Utilizing my contacts I was able to get the story the attention it deserves and finally attract the eyes of a major publisher. Above all, I hope the book and its plot add a new twist to history and prove that there’s no hard-and-fast truths when it comes to religion.”

Early reviews for the book have been extremely positive. Ben Peyton comments, “An explosive debut novel, and one that whets the appetite perfectly for a sequel. Bravo, Roy! I look forward to your next book.”

Andrew Morris adds, “A kick ass demon slayer with penchant for hard rock, tattoos, and some pretty mean swords. The tale propels you along at breakneck speed, barely allowing a breath between the action. Well researched, entertaining and a thoroughly good yarn, looking forward to the next one already.

Read it now, you will not be disappointed.”

PATRON - SUSAN THORSEN

Susan Thorsen is a Portland, Oregon born and raised American music photographer currently based in Portland, Oregon. Susan's initial interest in photography began as a mere child. When given her first camera at eight years of age, she knew immediately that the capture of life on film was to be her mission.

In the 1970's, Susan began studying fine arts and photography while high school in Portland, Oregon and continued as she attended college at Portland State University and the University of Oregon. As she worked toward earning a degree in fine arts, Susan found her primary photographic interests centered on people and animals. She became additionally challenged and motivated to build a successful business with photography by combining her love of music and photographic art with shooting photos of well known musicians in concert.

Over the years, Susan has traveled the globe to photograph countless concerts and music festivals and her work continues to be published regularly in many forms of world-wide media. After more than 35 years as a professional photographer, her life-long passion continues to inspire her on a daily basis. www.susanthorsen.com

"My experience in capturing and documenting indescribable moments in music history with photographs still continues to be the ultimate gift to my being. I have been involved first hand (immediate family) with the benefits that hospice care provides for terminally and seriously ill patients and their families and have a sincere interest and dedication to 'giving back'. Knowing that my work may help someone in need in any way, is an extreme compliment to my soul. I can truly say it is an honor for me to be asked to be a part of the chART UK team as a supporting patron."

chARTUK - Official Photographer.

Binks Live and Loud is born out of my love for taking pictures combined with listening to and supporting live music and those that play it.

I truly believe that a good image can say as much about a band or artist as the sound and performance. The chance to capture moments that show passion, energy and dedication is something that I can't get enough of.
